When the original Gauntlet came out, gaming was all about fast-twitch action, and it tops at providing it. Since then, role-playing has ruled the day, with games like Diablo and Baldur's Gate reigning supreme. Tries to walk the tightrope between both philosophies - action and RPG. While it missteps often, the draw of its multiplayer is enough to keep it from coming crashing to the ground.
Unlike the Dark Legacy games, this Gauntlet has a cohesive story behind it. An emperor betrays the four traditional Gauntlet heroes by taking their immortality. As either the warrior, valkyrie, wizard or elf, you must mow through his six twisted minions to regain everlasting life.
While I like that it's told from the ghost emperor's perspective, it does little for me, and is in fact a detriment. I imagine that if Seven Sorrows wasn't so tied to its story, it would offer a lot more playable characters at the outset - which would've been much preferred. The action is rabid, and there's always a horde of heathens begging to have you end their pathetic lives. Classic Gauntlet elements like enemy generators, chests, and life-giving floor meat appear, harkening back to the good old days.
If you like your gaming fast and furious, there's a lot to like here. Seven Sorrows also offers a good amount in the way of actions to execute - from massive combos to magic attacks to acrobatic shimmies. You have three attack buttons in the form of hack, slash, and launch, as well as a button to hurl infinite projectiles at faraway enemies. Role-playing elements are quaint, though you will gain experience and level up. When this happens, you can increase either your health, damage, or mana regeneration.
Gold earned will allow you to buy more attacks - including some nasty ones pulled off by hitting directions on the d-pad. Since the game is so stingy on characters, it would've been nice to have more in the way of character customization.
